Among the many pleasures of reading Jennifer Morag Henderson’s biography is that it redeems Josephine Tey’s Scottishness* and at the same time explains why she has not been ranked more highly in the canon of great Scottish writers. Jennifer Morag Henderson has given us a fine life of the British mystery writer Josephine Tey, and one I’m sure I never expected to see, given the mystery of Tey herself and the secrecy with which she lived her life. Henderson’s book is a series of attempts to show, nah, she wasn’t all that secretive, and some of her gambits work better than others, but in any event I can’t imagine a more thorough book than this one, not in my lifetime that is.
